Native Americans still lived in the area, but many had been displaced and had moved on to other states and territories after giving up their land to whites.Ĭommerce was established early on the Mississippi river and this drew people from the eastern States and north from the Deep South. Slavery was introduced in the territory in the early 1700’s. Missouri’s early European settlement was French France controlled a huge tract of eastern and central North America. The United States bought the territory from the French in 1803. Between 18 the state’s population more than doubled in number.
